Polycold is a brand of cryogenic water vapor pumps (water vapor cryopump). Mr. Meissner invented this product, the water vapor cryopump and related applications, and registered the brand Polycold. This brand belongs to Brooks Corporation in the USA. Domestic users often refer to this product directly as Polycold.

Application Principle

In high vacuum environments using oil diffusion pumps, there is always a certain amount of residual gas, over 80% of which is water vapor, oil vapor, and other high boiling point vapors. However, the ability to remove these residual gases is low, the time required is long, and all residual gases are still sources of contamination for the workpiece, thereby affecting product yield and quality. Cryogenic pumps are an excellent solution to such problems.

Working principle of cryogenic pumps: A refrigeration coil capable of reaching -120°C or below is placed inside the vacuum chamber or at the pump port of the oil diffusion pump. Through its low-temperature condensation effect on the surface, it rapidly captures residual gases in the vacuum system. This significantly shortens the vacuum pumping time (can reduce pumping time by 60-90%) and achieves a clean vacuum environment (vacuum level can be improved by half an order of magnitude, reaching 10^-8 Torr, 10^-5 Pa).

Classification

In practical applications, based on their placement, they can be divided into two categories:

1. Water Vapor Trap

Its refrigeration coil is often installed between the high valve and the vacuum chamber, inside the vacuum chamber, or in the upper and lower chambers of winding coating machines. It is suitable for applications such as low-temperature coating on plastics and winding coating, where the coated materials have a high outgassing rate. The coil requires a heating defrosting device to restore it to room temperature before each door opening, preventing the low-temperature coil from absorbing large amounts of water vapor from the atmosphere and frosting, which would affect the next vacuum pumping.

2. Cryogenic Cold Trap

Placed at the pump port of the oil diffusion pump, below the high valve, its main function is to prevent backstreaming of oil from the diffusion pump, while also increasing pumping speed and improving vacuum level. Since the system is under vacuum, no defrosting device is needed.

Depending on needs, the two can be installed separately or simultaneously.
